Fan

An OptiX OSN 9800 U16 subrack contains two fan tray assemblies, each of which has eight fans.

Version

The fan tray assembly has only one functional version: TNS1 ( TNS1FAN ). 

Functions and Features

Table 1 describes the functions of fan tray assemblies.

Function Description
Basic function Dissipates heat generated by subracks so that they can function within the designated temperature range.
Fan speed control
  • Auto Speed mode: When fans work in this mode, the fan tray assemblies automatically regulate fan speeds, depending on the subrack temperature.
  • Adjustable Speed mode: When fans work in this mode, the user can manually adjust the fan speeds.
Heat dissipation by section A subrack is divided into four sections for better heat dissipation. The speed of the fans in each section can be independently adjusted based on the board temperature of the subrack.
Hot swapping Fan tray assemblies are hot swappable.
Alarming Detects and reports fan alarms and online/offline information about fans.
Status checking Checks and reports fan status.

 

Fan Speed Mode

Two fan speed adjustment modes are supported: auto speed mode and adjustable speed mode, as described in Table 2. The auto speed mode is recommended.

Fan Speed Mode Description
Auto Speed The fans automatically adjust their speeds.

When the board temperature is within the specified range, the fans intelligently adjust their speeds to ensure stable heat dissipation for boards while ensuring low noise and energy consumption.

Adjustable Speed Six fan speed levels are supported in this mode: StopLow SpeedMedium-Low SpeedMedium SpeedMedium-High Speed, and High Speed. The user adjusts the fans in each fan tray assembly to rotate at the same speed. The user cannot adjust the speed for individual fans.

 

Functional Block Diagram

Each fan tray assembly contains eight fans (collectively referred to as FAN) and one fan control unit. Figure 1 shows the functional block diagram of the fan tray assembly.

  • FAN: dissipates heat generated by the subrack during normal operations. It is at the core of the fan tray assembly.
  • Fan control unit:
    • Controls fan speeds based on the fan speed regulating signals.
    • Detects faults. When the fan control unit detects that a fan in the fan tray assembly is faulty, it reports an appropriate alarm message.
    • Monitors the speed regulating signal, the fan status, and the online/offline information of the fan tray assembly.

Figure 2 shows the appearance of a fan tray assembly in the subrack.

A FAN hardware status indicator is present on the front panel of the FAN:

  • STAT: red, green, or yellow depending on the FAN hardware status when power is present on the fan tray assembly.

Valid Slots

The fan tray assembly occupies one slot in the subrack. In the OptiX OSN 9800 U16 subrack, the valid slots for the fan tray assembly are IU90 and IU91.

a: The fan rotation speed is intelligently controlled. When the system is typically configured, the fan rotation speed automatically adjusts to a low level. When the system is fully configured with boards consuming high power and is running at a high ambient temperature, the fan rotation speed may increase to a high level. When the fans in a fan tray assembly rotate at the maximum speed, the power consumption of the fan tray assembly of a U16 service subrack can reach 350 W, while the heat consumption is only 70 W. When the fans in a fan tray assembly rotate at the maximum speed, the power consumption of the fan tray assembly of a central cluster chassis can reach 300 W, while the heat consumption is only 60 W.

Table 4 and Table 5 describes the power consumption of common units in the OptiX OSN9800 U16 subrack.
